East London Aquarium

The East London aquarium is South Africa’s oldest aquarium and opened its doors originally in 1931 and lies on the esplanade on the beachfront in East London. The viewing deck is the best place to watch whales with daily sightings from August to November. You will also know when there are whales in the bay as they fly a special set of blue flags when the whales are sighted.  Although a small aquarium they have wholly unique displaces like the three Cape pigmy clawed lobsters – the only specimens ever to be kept in a public aquarium anywhere in the world.

The day started with an amazing race for the children and then the talk was attended by our youngest listener who insisted he was nearly three at two years and nine months. The children asked the most interesting and challenging questions of the series thus far and the time flew past. The NSRI station 7 then held a second festival day at the East London museum, with a second amazing race.
