Bay Action is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the research, conservation, and protection of the marine ecosystems of Algoa Bay and the Addo Canyons. Through scientific research, long-term monitoring, education, and collaboration, we work to conserve marine biodiversity and safeguard these unique and ecologically important habitats.
Algoa Bay and the Addo Canyons are exceptional marine ecosystems where biodiversity, ecological processes, and human activities intersect. These waters support an extraordinary diversity of marine life while providing important social, economic, and environmental benefits to the region.
As human pressures on the marine environment continue to grow, Bay Action works to advance research, monitoring, and conservation efforts that support the long-term protection of these unique ecosystems and the biodiversity they sustain.
Origin
Raggy Charters has been monitoring Algoa Bay since the early 2000s. During this time, thousands of wildlife sightings have been recorded through ongoing surveys, leading to the creation of the Bay Action initiative.
Our goal is to build alliances and collaborate with local stakeholders to protect key areas of the bay. As research continues, we are discovering increasing levels of biodiversity within these waters, highlighting just how remarkable and ecologically important this region is.
However, these critical habitats and biodiversity hotspots are shared with intensive human activities. The marine life that depends on these ecosystems faces growing pressures and requires effective protection and conservation.
It is with this purpose in mind that this NPO was established. We are currently managing two main projects: the Algoa Baywatch Monitoring Project and the Addo Canyons Research Project.
