ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE MAKHANDA

This talk was to marine science students at the Grahamstown marine science node.  This included learners from St Andrews college (the Hosts), The Diocesan School for Girls, and learners from Nombulelo Secondary School and Ntsika Senior Secondary School.  Marine Sciences is an interdisciplinary subject is made up of four pillars: Marine Biology and Oceanography (the Chemistry and Physics of the ocean) as well as Geology/Geography, Ecology and Human Impact on the Ocean. Learners are encouraged to not only know the content but also see the relevance of what they learn in the world around them.

Marine science is offered as an “after-school” 8th subject at the node schools.  Tim Barnard organised and hosted the event at St Andrews college which was attended by grade 9 – 10 learners and teachers.  Questions were challenging and demonstrated the value of this topic and the importance of a talk in linking the learning to a real-world example.
